OGDEN – Rheva Gibson Smart, 94, passed away at McKay-Dee Hospital on June 14, 2012 from causes incident to age.
Rheva was born January 29, 1918 to Josephine Marsela Scovil and Jacob Peter Gibson, the youngest of the siblings. She was raised on a dairy farm in West Weber by her mother after her father died just prior to her second birthday.
Rheva graduated from Weber High School and from Weber College in 1937. Rheva worked for the IRS and then as an administrative assistant for the U.S. Forest Service, retiring after 20 years of service.
Rheva married Earl W. Smart in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 28, 1943. They had two children, Michael and Joanne. Earl's education and early career saw the family living in Salt Lake City, Logan and Garden City, Utah, and Idaho City, Idaho before settling in Ogden, Utah.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rheva enjoyed traveling throughout much of the western United States with her sister Yula. Rheva also enjoyed spending time with her family and going to lunch at Sandy's and the McKay-Dee Hospital Cafeteria. She had only one vice: Idaho Powerball.
Rheva is survived by her son, Michael G. (Carolyn Novosel) Smart, Berkeley, Calif., and daughter, Joanne S. (Steven, deceased) Fielding, South Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by her three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her two sisters and two brothers.
The family would like to thank the staff at McKay-Dee Hospital and McKay-Dee Hospice.
